The 440 'RB" engine heritage dates
back to 1958, starting with the 350 cubic inch block 'B' engine. The
'B' engine was offered over the years in displacements of 361, 383
and 400 cubic inches. In 1958 Chrysler introduced a version of the
'B' engine with a raised deck block, giving it a longer piston
stroke. The new engine displaced 383 cubic inches and would be the
first 'RB' engine into production. In the following years
displacement was increased to 413, 426 and 440 cubic inches.
Standard engine for all years of the
Dodge Coronet R/T was the 440 C.I. 4-BBl Magnum V8. The "440 Six
Pack" engine was offered in 1969 - 1971. This engine featured three
two-barrel Holley carburetors on an Edelbrock aluminum intake
manifold. This engine was rated at 390 hp and 490 pounds-feet of
torque.
The 440 'RB" engine was an available
option on most Chryslers musclecars of the 60's and 70's including
Charger, Challenger, Road Runner, GTX, Super Bee and more. 440's
also powered many of Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouths large cars,
motorhomes and trucks. Production of the 440 'RB' engine ceased in
1978.
